The history and revival of German Riesling – Friday 8th May

Back in the late 19th century, Britain was the world’s most important market for the finest German white wines, known as Hock. A century later, most British drinkers associated German whites with the inexpensive, sweet Liebfraumilch style that fuelled a generation of house parties.

Both styles were approximations of the much-maligned German Riesling, whose reputation suffered as a result. Only more recently has it recovered to reclaim its rightful place as one of world’s most nuanced, terroir-driven wines.

Join our Head Sommelier & Lounge Operations Elton Muço and Sommelier Max Melvin to rediscover German Riesling through the lens of its fascinating relationship with the British market. Elton and Max will explore the key styles, classifications and vineyards, from the development of the Prädikat system (Kabinett, Auslese, Spätlese, etc) to the emergence of the premium Grosses Gewächs.

Through a curated selection of exceptional Rieslings across vineyards, vintages and styles, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, Members will experience how this noble grape has evolved under the careful husbandry of its premium producers.

We invite you to join Elton and Max for an enlightening and enchanting Friday evening.
