“Every time I think I know Chardonnay, a producer in some far-flung corner of the world comes up with an expression of the grape that confounds all my preconceptions.” So says Richard Bampfield MW about the grape he has chosen for his latest playful masterclass.
It’s hard to understand those who profess a dislike for Chardonnay – if ever there was a grape capable of producing wine in a myriad of different styles, it is surely Chardonnay. We invite Members at all stages of their wine discovery to join Richard as he pits 10 distinctive wines against each other in five pairings, via an enlightening comparative journey around the wine world.
This event will offer Members a taste of this noble grape’s “home patch”, with wines from Champagne and Burgundy, while Richard is also pulling out some exciting examples from the southern hemisphere – and even a wine from the country that has arguably made the greatest strides with the grape in recent vintages… England.
Richard has travelled to most of the regions and producers whose wines we will taste on the evening. Placing the emphasis on taste rather than technicalities, Richard will talk through his choices and explain the factors that contribute to Chardonnay’s diversity – and quality – in what is sure to be a light-hearted but eye-opening evening.
