An evening with Olivier Krug – Friday 3rd October
It was in 1843 that Joseph Krug set out the vision that has defined his family house’s identity ever since. Krug determined to create the finest possible Champagne each and every year, regardless of conditions, released as a ‘Grande Cuvée’ that would go beyond the notion of vintage to create the most generous expression from year to year.
That approach has been maintained ever since, with the house recently releasing the 173rd edition of its Grande Cuvée. The wine is the ultimate triumph of blending, crafted from the 250 different plots and vast library of reserve wines that the house now has at its disposal. Each new edition is a blend of at least 120 different components spanning ten different years, fermented in small oak barrels and aged in bottle for seven years before release.
Though now part of the empire of luxury group LVMH, the house’s figurehead remains Olivier Krug, the sixth generation of the family. And we’re delighted to welcome Olivier for a rather special evening at the Club, in which he will guide us through not just the four most recent editions of the Grande Cuvée, but the house’s rosé, three vintage bottlings (including the library release of the acclaimed 1995) and the vaunted single-vineyard Blanc de Noirs, Clos D’Ambonnay.
Ambonnay has long been an integral component of the Krug make-up, on account of the remarkable quality of its Pinot Noir. The house finally acquired the site in 1994, immediately deciding to release a single-vineyard wine from it (the 2006, which we will enjoy, is only the sixth vintage to be made). It is now the site of the recently unveiled Krug winery, inaugurated last year.
Olivier is an entertaining and genial host – expect him to focus as much on his preferred music choices for each wine as the specifics of the blends (for a further flavour, click here to read the interview we did with Olivier in the Back Label newsletter earlier in the year).
