2019 Barolo del Comune Report with Federico Moccia and Nelson Pari – Wednesday 19th April
According to data gathered by the Consorzio, there are only a limited number of Barolo del Comune produced, less than 100 in fact. A fact which our hosts believe highlights the neglected state of this style within the region.
They believe that the future of Barolo lies in adopting a Burgundian approach, with an emphasis on village wines. This will require the efforts of producers, importers, sommeliers, and consumers alike to understand the importance of this approach: communal wines will play a crucial role in educating the trade and elevating the MGA category as a whole. (MGA, or Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva, being the equivalent of the French ‘Cru’ or ‘Climat’)
The 2019 vintage in Barolo was marked by a long winter, followed by incessant spring rains that delayed harvest by approximately two weeks. The summer was mild, interrupted by two brief but intense heatwaves. Many plots were successfully harvested by mid-October, before the arrival of two consecutive weeks of autumn rains.
