Three families, two centuries of passion

Bernard O’Phelan, a young Irish wine merchant, left his native town of Tipperary at the end of the 18th century to set himself up in Bordeaux. He married one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, who was a well-known merchant in the region. With the help of his father-in-law he acquired Clos de Garramey in 1805, and started producing wine.

On the death of Bernard in 1841, this vast estate, which at that time was called Château Ségur de Garramey, was passed on to Frank O’Phelan, his son. Frank became mayor of Saint-Estèphe and remained in that post for thirty years while advancing within the Irish community in Bordeaux, which included among others the Johnston, Barton, Clarke and Lynch families.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Château Ségur de Garramey took on its modern name, Château Phélan Ségur.

Fast forward to 1985 and the Gardinier family became the guardians of the Phélan Ségur heritage when Xavier Gardinier bought the property from the Delon family. At the start of the 1990s, Xavier’s oldest son, Thierry personally took over the running of the vineyard, supported by his brothers Stéphane and Laurent. He has marked the property with his personality, the values of humanism cultivated by his family, and an unconventional and demanding vision. A very special spirit closely echoed since 2010 by Véronique Dausse, the Director of the Château.

The Château is under the family-owned ‘Gardinier Group’ umbrella, alongside Taillevent (Paris), Les Crayères (Reims) and 110 de de Taillevent (Paris & London). We are delighted to welcome Thierry Gardinier to 67 Pall Mall to guide us through this quintessential Saint-Estèphe property and the magnificent terroir-led wines that they produce in a Masterclass dinner in the St James’s Room.
