wines of germany, a walk-around tasting
On Tuesday 7th May, we invite Members to an impressive German walk-around tasting, showcasing 2018 Rieslings and 2017 Pinot Noirs, with a smattering of other varietals.

Germany was always considered to be one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, with Riesling prices similar to those of first growth Bordeaux in the early 1900’s.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s, German wines fell out of fashion mainly due to the pursuit of higher yields. However, this wine producing nation is making a comeback, seeking to retake its position at the top table of fine wine production.
Whilst Riesling is still the most important variety in Germany, (the grape now covers 23,700 hectares, almost a quarter of the total area under vine in Germany), the enthusiasm for the country’s Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) is entirely justified. Whilst we don’t see huge quantities on the export market, the quality has risen enormously over the past 10 years. This is due to planting better clones, using better barrels, cutting yields, adapting winemaking techniques and partly helped by climate change.
The Club will be hosting a tasting of newly released Rieslings and Pinot Noirs from across the wine regions of Germany, featuring some of the county’s most highly awarded growers.
