Château Pontet-Canet

Château Pontet-Canet is one of the Medoc’s most critically acclaimed estates. It may be a fifth growth, but with its vineyards next to those of Mouton-Rothschild, it belongs to the elite club of over-achieving châteaux which have caught the attention of wine lovers around the world.

Over the course of three centuries, Château Pontet-Canet has known three owners and three families. The first was Jean-Francois de Pontet, who made a name for himself at the court in Versailles, where he had held the position of Grand Ecuyer (Master of the Horse) for Louis XV, and upon his return to Guyenne, he became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705, he planted vines in a few acres of land that he purchased, located north of Pauillac and a few years later, he added several parcels in a place called Canet.

As was the custom at the time, he added his own name to his land in order to give his estate a recognisable identity. In 1865 the estate changed hands for the first time and became the property of Herman Cruse, and it remained in the Cruse family for 110 years until in 1975 it was acquired by cognac merchant Guy Tesseron.

The reputation of the property soared when Guy’s son, Alfred Tesseron took charge in 1994, and the estate was the first in the Médoc to become 100% biodynamic certified and organic certified over the 81 hectares of vines.

The Club welcomes Alfred’s daughter, Justine to guide Members through a Masterclass of this superb wine. Alfred and Justine have chosen the six wines which they consider to be Pontet-Canet’s finest since Alfred took over in 1994, and will demonstrate the proof of quality through their commitment to the biodynamic practices.
