40 Years Of Château Montrose
Château Montrose is one of the few estates in Bordeaux not named after an original owner – according to local legend, it was the reference by local sailors to the hills covered in pink heather that inspired this name. Its pink hue, visible from the nearby estuary, prompted the name ‘Mont Rose’ or ‘Pink Mountain’.

The Château had been owned by the Charmolüe family since 1896 until it was sold in 2006 to the Bouygues brothers. Under Martin Bouygues’ impetus, Château Montrose underwent a spectacular rehabilitation project combining construction and renovation, traditional architecture and high-tech facilities that was completed in time for the 2013 harvest. In 2011 the Bouygues persuaded Hervé Berland to join them from Château Mouton Rothschild. Together they have ensured that Montrose is as green and environmentally conscious as possible.
The 94-hectare vineyard lies on a gravelly knoll only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary, where the proximity of the estuary provides a unique micro-climate. Château Montrose is famous for producing some of the Médoc’s longest lasting wines and Members will be able to witness this themselves with a vertical of this renowned wine back to the 1975 vintage.
It is a real privilege to welcome Hervé Berland, CEO of Château Montrose to the Club, to guide Members through 40 years of what has been nicknamed the “First growth of St-Estèphe”.
