Champagne Charlie’s Cru

9 July 2019

On Monday 8th July, leading Champagne House, famous for its expertise in producing reserve wines and selecting vintages to enter its blend, Charles Heidsieck, unveiled some of its gems in an extremely limited edition of Coteaux Champenois Blancs. Four crus, happily selected by and favourites of Cellar Master Cyril Brun, were offered for a horizontal tasting. The feedback we had was astounding – very few Members who attended had tasted still wines from a champagne house, so it was fascinating to compare and contrast the crus, let alone discuss the high quality of these expressions that are usually hard to obtain.

Following this incredibly eye-opening event, a few of our Members went upstairs to the Club with a taste for Charles Heidsieck. It wasn’t long before a bottle of 1979 ‘Champagne Charlie’ Brut Millesime was ordered, and our sommelier Klearhos was lucky enough to have a taste. “This was one of the best Champagne’s I have ever had” – an incredible accolade from someone who has had the pleasure of trying some of the finest expressions in the world.

Klearhos mentioned that “ the intense notes of brioche, nougat, candied apple, honey and cream ensures this wine is still fresh and boasts a very long finish. Old wines can change over time to become vinegary and one dimensional, but not this one”.

Whilst we’re all seething with jealously, it was a true pleasure to open this bottle in the Club.

Keep an eye on our wine list as we await the arrival of more aged Champagnes to add to you ‘to try’ list…
