Bottled history – 1975 Muscat Samos Nectar
Roberto, our sommelier was fortunate enough to open a very special, very rare bottle of sweet wine; 1975 Muscat Samos Nectar.
Muscat Samos Nectar is made by the Union of Viticultural Co-operatives that was founded in 1934 on the Greek Island of Samos, close to the Turkish Coast.
We hear Roberto’s enviable story.

Nothing could make me happier and prouder as a sommelier than to be given the opportunity to open this reliquial wine.
Samos Nectar is one of the finest wines in the world from overripe, sun-dried grapes aged 4-7 year in oak Barrels. The 1975 Vintage is considered to be one of the finest vintages for this sweet wine style, similar to 1968 and 1980.
This wine has a deep amber colour with tawny hints which indicates the beautiful ageing profile. The pure characters on the nose of sundried fruits (particularly dried figs and apricots), orange peel, slightly burnt caramel, roasted hazelnuts, cinnamon and dark chocolate leaves a haunting, memorable impression.
On the palate the wine was lively and full-bodied. The surprisingly elevated acidity balanced the sugar beautifully, whilst the toasty and raisin-like characters dominated the palate. This perfectly harmonious and exotic tasting experience came to an end with a long orange peel and honeysuckle aftertaste, bringing even more more freshness to this spectacular wine.
