Bordeaux – getting better with age

A Member and their guest were sat in the wine library yesterday afternoon and wanted to do some exploration of some older Bordeaux vintages – a request that our sommelier, Declan was very happy to assist with. There were two that particularly stood out. Defined and earthy, the 1997 Château Lafleur is showing a great amount of fruit for the vintage. This wine is beautifully balanced – it is structured yet remains elegant, with subtle spices and notes of autumn leaves. With aged wood characters and a smooth finish, this wine is drinking brilliantly. Secondly, 1970 Château Montrose. This was an exceptional vintage, fashioned with exceptional climatic conditions. This wine was a truffle bomb, with a lot of fresh-turned earth and forest floor characters. The palate is complex, greedy, full, and balanced. A stunning wine.
