The Art of Ageing with Kanonkop

Friday 24th October

Few estates capture the essence of South African fine wine like Kanonkop, a family-owned property on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. Established in 1929, Kanonkop has become synonymous with authenticity, tradition, and the pursuit of age-worthy red wines – particularly Pinotage, the Cape’s signature grape.

Under the stewardship of fourth-generation owner Johann Krige, the estate draws on a century of accumulated knowledge, refining its traditional techniques to create wines that express their terroir with depth, precision, and enduring structure. In this masterclass, Johann will lead Members through a comparative tasting that traces Kanonkop’s evolution across time.

Each cuvée – Estate Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Paul Sauer – is presented in two vintages, pairing the freshness and precision of youth with the layered complexity of maturity. The Estate Pinotage, long regarded as the benchmark, combines vivid fruit purity with fine, firm tannins – a style that has come to define modern Pinotage. The Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from some of the oldest dry-farmed vines on the Simonsberg Mountain, offers classic structure, dark fruit, and eloquent ageing potential. Paul Sauer, the flagship Bordeaux-style blend, unites Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in a seamless expression of depth, balance, and longevity, consistently recognised among South Africa’s most collectible wines. The tasting concludes with a 2007 Pinotage Magnum from the estate’s private cellar – a testament to the variety’s enduring poise and character.

Join us for an evening where past and present converge, tasting how time has shaped Kanonkop’s most distinguished reds, guided by Johann Krige’s first-hand reflections on the estate’s enduring craft.

The wines we will taste:
2015 Kanonkop, Estate Pinotage
2022 Kanonkop, Estate Pinotage
2011 Kanonkop, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
2019 Kanonkop, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

The Judgement of Victoria with Richard Hemming MW

Wednesday 29th October

Australia’s finest meet Old World benchmarks in our next installment of Keys to the Cellar, led by Richard Hemming MW. Eight wines go glass-to-glass across four match-ups that explore lineage, ambition and quality. Can a cool-climate Victorian Chardonnay stand alongside Puligny-Montrachet? Can a Yarra Valley Cabernet blend match the poise of a second growth from Bordeaux?

This is a celebration of Victoria’s finest wines, showcasing why the region is gaining momentum on the international stage. From innovative winemaking techniques to meticulous vineyard management, Victorian producers are producing wines that express their sites with precision, balance, and individuality.

Chardonnay Showdown – Giaconda, a benchmark for Victorian Chardonnay, meets Domaine de Montille in Puligny-Montrachet, renowned for its elegance and clarity.

Pinot Noir Playoff – Lethbridge in Geelong, celebrated for its terroir-driven Pinot Noir, faces Edouard Delaunay in Morey-Saint-Denis, a producer emblematic of Burgundian tradition.

Syrah Standoff – Place of Changing Winds in Harcourt, representing modern Victorian innovation, takes on E. Guigal Saint-Joseph, a Northern Rhône reference for refinement and power.

Cabernet Clash – Mount Mary in the Yarra Valley, known for elegant, age-worthy blends, meets Château Léoville Poyferré, the Saint-Julien estate regarded for structure and consistency.

Victoria’s winemakers have been quietly rewriting the rules, and in this masterclass, we’ll see how closely their wines mirror Old World benchmarks. Each wine will be served semi-blind: the line-up is known, but the glass is not. The challenge for Members, is to taste without preconception and decide whether heritage and innovation truly converge.

Secure your ringside seat for this fierce and flavourful face-off.

The wines we will taste:
2021 Giaconda, Estate Vineyard, Chardonnay
2022 Domaine de Montille, Puligny-Montrachet, 1er Cru Les Folatières

2021 E. Guigal, Saint-Joseph, Vignes de l’Hospice
2019 Mount Mary Vineyard, Quintet
2016 Château Léoville Poyferré, 2ème Cru Classé

Halloween Danse Macabre

Saturday 1st November

In 15th-century Europe, the medieval allegory Danse Macabre – the Dance of Death – depicted Death as the great unifier, calling forth pope, king, child, and labourer to join a final waltz into the grave. Frivolous yet chilling, it served as a memento mori, a reminder of life’s impermanence and the vanity of earthly glory.

This Halloween, step into our most immersive event of the season – a night where beauty meets decay, and every corner whispers of the inevitable.

Let tarot reveal what the veil may hide. Share ghost stories in our Spirit Circle. Wander through rich, immersive décor that brings the allegory to life.

As the night deepens, DJ Taz Angullia takes the decks – spinning Techno House beats to raise even the most restless spirits.

The Barolo Boys’ Guide to Village Crus

Wednesday 5th November

Federico Moccia and Nelson Pari – affectionately known as The Barolo Boys – first bonded in the cellars of 67 Pall Mall London over their shared fascination with Italy’s most storied region. Federico, now Head of Wine Operations, hails from Brescia near the Franciacorta hills, while Nelson has gone on to become a respected wine buyer and journalist. Together, they bring a healthy dose of curiosity to every glass of Nebbiolo they pour.

Starting our November masterclasses with a bang, they invite Members to explore a side of Barolo often overlooked: Barolo del Comune – the “village” expression of this famous appellation. Fewer than a hundred producers make these wines, yet they offer perhaps the clearest window into the land itself. Fede and Nelson argue that the future of Barolo lies in celebrating these origins, much like Burgundy’s villages and crus, where each commune expresses its unique character.

Through 11 producers from the 2021 vintage, Members will journey across Piedmont’s mosaic of communes. Experience Verduno’s aromatic elegance with Diego MorraLa Morra’s delicate charm from CrissanteSerralunga’s structure and depth via Palladino and Garesio, and Monforte d’Alba’s vibrant yet refined expressions from Castello di Perno and Fortemasso

Nelson and Federico describe 2021 as a classic year: a mild, dry winter followed by late budding and some frost challenges, then a warm, steady spring and summer. The result is wines of poise, balance and energy, with well-integrated tannins, bright aromatics, and the structure to age gracefully. Members will taste how each producer interprets their commune differently – some emphasising finesse and perfume, others leaning into power and tension – giving a full perspective on the diversity of Barolo del Comune.

Raise a glass with the Barolo Boys and experience the character and charm of the Piedmont village crus.

The wines we will taste:

2021 Diego Morra, Barolo del Comune di Verduno
2021 Marchesi di Barolo, Barolo del Comune di Barolo
2021 Scarzello, Barolo del Comune di Barolo
2021 Crissante, Barolo del Comune di La Morra
2021 Monchiero, Barolo del Comune di Castiglione Falletto
2021 Castello di Perno, Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba
2021 Fortemasso, Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba
2021 Garesio, Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba
2021 Palladino, Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba

Under the Bolgheri Sun: A deep dive into the home of the Super Tuscans

Thursday 6th November

Continuing on their Italian countryside journey, Federico Moccia and Nelson Pari turn to Tuscany’s coast where Bolgheri has earned a reputation for some of Italy’s most sought-after wines. Tasting nine spectacular and diverse wines from the 2022 vintage allows Members to explore the region through four perspectives: styles and appellations, grape varieties, estates and growers, and soils. Each selection illustrates a different aspect of Bolgheri’s character, showcasing how the region’s diversity, terroir, and winemaking philosophies come together to create icons.

Styles/Appellations
Members will explore Bolgheri’s range, tasting Le Macchiole, Tenuta Argentiera, and Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia, highlighting the spectrum from structured reds to the fresh coastal white Grattamacco Vermentino.

Varieties
This flight highlights Bolgheri’s key grape varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Petit Verdot – through standout examples such as Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Poggio al Tesoro “Dedicato a Walter”, and Michele Satta “Piastraia”. Together, they reveal how blending choices and varietal balance define the region’s signature style.

Estates/Growers
Members will discover the vision of leading producers, including Tenuta Guado al Tasso, Fabio Motta, and I Luoghi, appreciating how estate philosophy and care influence style.

Soils
Finally, the tasting explores terroir with I Greppi, Greppicaia and Caccia al Piano 1868, displaying how Bolgheri’s mineral-rich soils shape structure, texture, and flavour.

Join the Barolo Boys on a tasty Tuscan detour, discovering the character of Bolgheri’s soils, microclimates, and winemaking philosophies, and experience why the 2022 vintage is compelling now while promising even more with age.

Traversing Telmo’s Terroir: From Galician granite to the limestone slopes of Rioja

Tuesday 11th November

Few names embody the spirit of Spain’s viticultural renaissance as vividly as Telmo Rodríguez. Trained in Bordeaux and seasoned in the Rhône Valley, Telmo has spent more than three decades redefining the idea of terroir in his homeland. After a decade restoring his family estate, Remelluri, he founded Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez in 1994 with Pablo Eguzkiza. Together, they have resurrected forgotten vineyards, championed native varieties, and given voice to historic sites once on the brink of obscurity.

In this masterclass, Telmo Rodríguez presents the 2019 vintage, a study in landscape and identity across two singular regions. From the misty, slate-strewn valleys of Valdeorras, where Atlantic breezes lend precision and minerality, to the sunlit limestone slopes of Rioja, layered with warmth and structure, each vineyard reflects a distinct facet of Spain’s geography and Telmo’s philosophy of authenticity.

The evening begins with Branco de Santa Cruz, an expressive Galician white showing citrus, white blossom, and a fine saline edge. The tasting then journeys through a series of single-vineyard reds – LG Valbuxan Tinto Lexitimo, La Falcoeira, As Caborcas, O Diviso, El Velado, La Estrada, and Tabuerniga – each revealing its own altitude, aspect, and geology, from rugged schist to refined limestone. Members will gain insight into Telmo’s approach to terroir and taste how the single-vineyard stories translate into the glass.

Join us for an evening that explores Spain’s most evocative terroirs through one of its most visionary winemakers.

The wines we will taste:

2019 Telmo Rodríguez, LG Valbuxán Tinto Lexitimo
2019 Telmo Rodríguez, La Falcoeira
