Jasper on Terroir: Morgon
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW, Mee Godard, Louis-Benoit Desvignes & Jean-Marc Burgaud
Of all Beaujolais’ 10 crus, Morgon is regularly name-checked as being the one whose wines will not only manage, but indeed require and subsequently blossom from an extended stay in the cellar.
Its soils, known locally as roche pourrie (‘rotten rock’) – often tinged blue and laced with deposits from a long-silent volcano – are particular to the area and add the stuffing to Morgon’s brand of the Gamay grape.
Jasper Morris MW visits winemaker Jean-Marc Burgaud – one of Morgon’s luminaries – to investigate the nooks and crannies of this compelling appellation, unpick its geological fabric and uncork a clutch of its finest, terroir-crafted wines to help complete the picture.
