D’Oliveiras Madeira

Heat and air, the sworn enemies of most wines and winemakers, conspire to turn Madeira into one of the world’s most enthralling wines, as well as the most resilient.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome Luis D’Oliveiras to the Club who will guide us through some rare vintages of this legendary and indestructible desert island wine…

During the 17th century, wine was often spoiled and needed to be fortified (by adding alcohol) to survive a voyage at sea. The seamen would load up on Madeira before making their way to the Americas, and noticed that the wines were getting better and better after a lengthy voyage through the tropics…

D’Oliveiras is one of the oldest Madeira houses of the small Portuguese island. Dating back to 1820, they are now the only Portuguese-owned company producing this unique wine. The tradition at D’Oliveiras has always been to hold back some bottles, creating an incomparable and outstanding library of back vintages.

It is a pleasure to welcome Luis D’Oliveiras to the Club, who will guide Members through this superb line up of bottled history.
