weingut huber bernhard

More than 700 years ago, Cistercian monks came to Malterdingen (the Breisgau area of southwest Germany) and discovered the same terroir as Burgundy. As such, they started to plant Pinot Noir grapes and today, in many reference books on grape varieties, “Malterdinger” is used as a synonym for Pinot Noir.

Bernhard took over the family’s 5 hectares located in Malterdingen in 1986. Beforehand, the entire crop was sold to the local ‘Winzergenossenschaft’ (Co-op), however this gradually stopped in favour of producing and bottling everything himself with his wife, Barbara, building up from 5 to 29 hectares under vine.

We were saddened by the news that Bernhard Huber died on the 11th June 2014 – a man who achieved an enormous amount in his 55 years. Bernhard was held by many to be Germany’s finest red wine producer and was instrumental in putting German Pinot Noir firmly on the world stage.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the next generation, Bernhard’s son, Julian, to host a Masterclass of this outstanding German winery; all Huber wines are dry – they do not produce any botrytised noble sweet wines or ice wines, nor do they stop the fermentation or add Suessreserve to generate sweetness in the finished wine. All wines are fully fermented, dry and at around 13.5 percent alcohol.
