Exploring the legacy of Robert Mondavi over dinner with Director of Winemaking Kurtis Ogasawara – Monday 2nd November
When the legendary Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966, it was with the ambition of creating wines that would bear comparison with the world’s best. He realised his goal through tireless, uncompromising commitment, boundless energy and enthusiasm – and, in no small part, the To Kalon vineyard.
While Mondavi went on to expand his reach via Opus One, Seña and Ornellaia, it is for his role at the forefront of Napa’s assault on the world stage that he is best known. Among his most notable landmarks was the 1968 launch of his Fumé Blanc – essentially a rebrand for the then sweet and unfashionable Sauvignon Blanc as an oaked, dry white that came to be known as a distinctly Californian style, and was for many year’s Mondavi’s signature bottling.
His most critically acclaimed wine, however, was the To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that cemented the reputation of vineyard and winery alike. Today, To Kalon stands unopposed as Napa Valley’s premier vineyard, since adopted by several parties to make a host of prized wines. It remains most associated with the Mondavi brand, however, yielding the two wines that made the winery’s name, and now 100% organically farmed under director of winemaking Kurtis Ogasawara.
Kurtis was a slow starter in wine, initially being accepted at University of California Davis as an engineering student on an athletics scholarship. After transitioning to winemaking and beginning his post-graduate career in sparkling wine at Mumm Napa and then Domaine Chandon, he made up for lost time with three years at Newton Vineyard, before joined Robert Mondavi Winery in 2015, where, within a decade, he rose to become director of winemaking.
We’re thrilled to welcome Kurtis to the Club for an intimate dinner exploring the Mondavi legacy and the To Kalon wines back to 1995 in what should be a fantastic evening.
