The Premiers Crus of Pouilly-Fuissé and friends, with Charles Curtis MW – Tuesday 12th May

The hunt for good-value white Burgundy is something of a holy grail, but according to Charles Curtis MW, the Mâconnais is the place to go.

‘There are unquestionably wines produced there today that are the equal of the renowned wines of the Côte d’Or and Chablis,’ writes Charles in his profile of the region for Decanter magazine.

But while Chablis and the Côte d’Or are richly endowed with village, premier-cru and grand-cru wines, the Mâconanais has traditionally been home to an ocean of regional-level wine, relatively few village-level appellations, only a handful of premiers crus and no grands crus.

That, however, is slowly changing. Five years ago, a suite of sites in the region’s most renowned appellation, Pouilly-Fuissé, were designated premier cru; last year, a further raft was announced for neighbouring Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly Vinzelles.

We are delighted to welcome Charles, the former head of wine for Christie’s auction house in both the Americas and Asia, author of The Original Grands Crus of Burgundy, and Decanter’s Burgundy correspondent, back to the Club to explore this rapidly evolving appellation. We invite you to join him to discover the names to know.
