A whistle-stop tour of Burgundy with Domaine Jean Fery – Thursday 22nd January
The story of Domaine Jean Fery begins not with grapes, but with berries. In the 1920s, such was the reputation of founder Louis Jacob as a fruit grower that his intensely aromatic blackcurrant buds became a secret ingredient in Chanel No. 5.
As the family’s reputation grew, the next generation turned their attention towards accruing Burgundian vineyards, with Jacob’s daughter Marcelle playing a key role in establishing AOC status for Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Hautes-Côtes de Nuits in 1961.
Today, steered by brothers Frédéric and Laurent Fery, the family domaine covers 33 hectares across 36 different sites. This mosaic of small, prized parcels, all certified organic, stretches across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Pernand-Vergelesses, Meursault, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin.
Under winemaker François Lecaillon (previously of Domaine de la Vougeraie and Armand Heitz), production is intentionally small, with each cuvée averaging just 2,000-3,000 bottles. Lecaillon employs both wood and ceramic vessels for ageing, with the reds seeing judicious proportions of whole-bunch fermentation for aromatic lift, freshness and spice, while sulphur is kept to a minimum to preserve transparency of fruit.
We are delighted to welcome Laurent Fery to the Club for a tasting of seven cuvées from both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, in a whistle-stop tour of Burugndy from one of the region’s most forward-thinking domaines.
