Live From the Vines: E. Guigal
Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Philippe Guigal
Established in 1946, Guigal is arguably a more recent tenant of a region which – like many others in France – threads its way back to the Romans. Yet, despite its relative precociousness, for much of its existence Guigal has been justifiably framed as Rhône nobility.
Guigal’s birthplace is a region in the Rhône’s north where the sun is capable of cascading down onto the vines to such extremes that it gave the appellation its name: Côte Rôtie, or ‘roasted slope’.
While the northern Rhône remains its beating heart, in 2017 Guigal spread its wings, incorporating into its stable the Châteauneuf-du-Pape property of Domaine Nalys.
The sum of these parts represents a cross section of the Rhône Valley’s preeminent sites, and Philippe Guigal joins Richard Bampfield MW to discuss his family’s adventures and taste the wines which are also available as a tasting kit to our digital members.
