The Canadian wine industry has had a bit of a rocky ride…

During the first half of the twentieth century, the temperance movement and the demand for fortified and sweet wines hindered the development of a quality table wine industry.

It was during the 60’s that this demand shifted from sweet and fortified wines to drier and low alcohol wines. There was significant growth and development within the Canadian wine industry during this time, with access to better grape varieties, disease resistant clones and in-depth viticulture research.

In 1988, a trio of events took place to enable the vines to thrive; free trade with the US, the establishment of the VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) and a major upgrading system within the vineyards. The 90’s saw the rise in icewine, a category of wine that Canada can reliably produce, however in recent times, Canada is producing some beautiful dry expressions.
