Nestled in the volcanic hillsides of Veneto, Soave is one of the most venerable appellations in all of Italy.
The ancient centre of Soave predates modern civilisation, harking back to the Stone Age. Its medieval heart is encircled by the walls of the Castle of Soave, itself surrounded by sprawling hills and vineyards. Soave’s beatific but lofty landscape underlines the importance and, at times, heroism of the intrepid vine growers who conserve this landscape through their work.
Members will be familiar with the traditional grape variety of the region, Garganega, first introduced by the Romans 2,000 years ago as ‘Graecanicum’ (meaning ‘from Greece’). Today, its finest expressions harness the texture, richness and delightful acidity to make for a formidable food-matching wine.
Soave Classico runs eastwards from the medieval town of Soave to Monteforte d’Alpone, and it is here that we find noble expressions of Garganega which are set apart by their minerality, freshness, sapidity and longevity.
Join our host, Michael Palij MW, for an evening spotlighting ten of the most exciting wines of this volcanic region, produced by five of Soave’s most eminent producers.
