Vertical tasting of Chilean star Don Melchor going back to 1988 – Friday 4th October

Within Chile’s evolution as a fine-wine producing country over the last four decades, few wines have made such an impact as Don Melchor.

Arguably the country’s original ‘icon’ wine, Don Melchor was first released in 1987, by the pioneering Concha y Toro, which had planted its first vines in Maipo Valley a century earlier. A Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine showcased the then still under-appreciated terroir of the sub-region of Puente Alto. Over the years, the spot has become a hotbed for quality Cabernet.

Today, while the brand is still owned by Concha y Toro, Don Melchor exists as a separate entity, with a dedicated winemaking and viticultural team, and is made at its own winery. As such, it sits alongside other premium Chilean labels such as Seña and Alamviva (which Concha y Toro part-owns, with Baron Philippe de Rothschild).

Since the 1997 harvest, the production of Don Melchor has been overseen by Enrique Tirado (above) who knows the local terroir like few others. After taking over, he continued to work on the final blend with Jacques Boissenot, the prominent French consultant who advises countless Bordeaux classed growths; today Jacques’s son, Eric Boissenot, carries on his father’s legacy.

We are delighted to welcome Enrique to the Club to talk us through a rare six-vintage vertical of the wine, including just the second vintage ever made, 1988, as well as a bonus vintage of Concha y Toro’s acclaimed Amelia Chardonnay.

Join us on the first Friday in October for an evening with a distinctly Latin flavour.
