T-Oinos Tasting: Explore Greek Wine with Master Vigneron Stéphane Derenoncourt – Monday 20th November

Stéphane Derenoncourt has long been one of the wine world’s most renowned consultants, making his name working for famed châteaux on both the Left and Right Banks of Bordeaux, including Smith Haut Lafitte, Pavie-Macquin and Domaine de Chevalier. His talents have also been harnessed at estates around the globe, from La Massa in Tuscany to Francis Ford Coppola’s Inglenook in Napa.

Today, arguably his most eye-catching project comes in Greece, home to increasingly acclaimed wines. Lying northwest of Mykonos in the southern Aegean Sea, fully at the mercy of the elements, sits the island of Tinos, its rugged terrain dotted with enormous granite boulders and stone shelters. Since the inhospitable surroundings made transporting grapes to the mainland impossible, the stones were traditionally harnessed to house wine presses and the grapes vinified on the spot.

It is in this wild location, in 1999, that Alexandre Avatangelos launched the T-OINOS project, dedicated to two indigenous varieties: Assyrtiko and Mavrotragano. Now with fully mature vineyards, Alexandre has since joined forces with head sommelier of the Alain Ducasse Group, Gérard Margeon, and Stéphane, to elevate the wines onto the global stage.

We are thrilled to welcome Stéphane to the Club to bring a little of the incredible energy of Tinos, and to outline how he strives to reproduce it in the wines, and how he considers the island ‘a kind of secret garden… a magical place’.

We’re confident Members will need little encouragement to join us for what is sure to be an evening of superb, character-laden wines in the company of a similarly engaging winemaker.
