The Hospices de Beaune is something of a Burgundy institution. But while the name is renowned, its inner workings remain out-of-reach for many wine lovers. We are delighted, then, to announce an event that will bring the Hospices and its wines right here to London.
Founded in 1443 at the famous Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, the Hospices was originally conceived as a charitable hospital to provide care and shelter to the most needy in the local community. In the years since its founding, it received numerous bequests from generous benefactors in the form of vineyards. And since 1859, the new vintage of the wines made from these sites has been sold at auction – in barrel – on the third Sunday of each November following the harvest, with all proceeds going to medical care and equipment, and the modernisation of the hospital.
Today the auction is the world’s most renowned wine sale and the oldest such charity event. Orchestrated by Sotheby’s, it features more than 500 lots from the various crus owned by the Hospices, bearing the names of their benefactors. The holdings cover nearly 60 hectares, mainly devoted to Pinot Noir along with some Chardonnay, nearly 85% of which are premiers and grands crus – mainly located around Beaune but also in the Côte de Nuits and the Mâconnais. This year’s auction – the 164th – will be held at the Halles de Beaune on 17 November 2024, with the 2024 vintage marking the conversion of the entire Hospices holdings to organic farming.
We are delighted to partner with Sotheby’s to welcome the Hospices de Beaune winemaker, Ludivine Griveau, to the Club for a rather special evening ahead of this year’s auction. Ludivine will showcase some of the standout wines from previous years, going back to 2016, complemented by a specially prepared menu. We invite you to join her for what promises to be a memorable evening.
