Robert Mondavi and the To Kalon vineyard with Konstantin Baum MW – Friday 15th November

When the legendary Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966, it was with the ambition to create wines that would bear comparison with the world’s best. To do so, he chose the To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville as his primary source. Today it stands unopposed as Napa Valley’s premier site, one of the few in California to have achieved international renown.

While Mondavi was to become a globally recognised figure, later expanding his reach via Opus One, Seña and Ornellaia, it is for his role at the forefront of Napa’s assault on the world stage that he will always be best known. Among his most notable landmarks was the 1968 launch of his Fumé Blanc – essentially a rebrand for the then sweet and unfashionable Sauvignon Blanc as an oaked, dry white. In so doing he pioneered a style that is distinctly Californian, was instantly popular and became his signature wine.

His most critically acclaimed bottling, however, was his To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that cemented the reputation of vineyard and winery alike. The vineyard has since been adopted by several parties to make a host of prized wines, but it remains most associated with the Mondavi brand, yielding the two wines that made its name, and today 100% organically farmed by the winery.

Join us for a vertical tasting of these two wines, going back to the start of the century, and led by Konstantin Baum MW. Germany’s youngest Master of Wine and one of Europe’s leading experts of North American wines, Konstantin is a supreme – and dare we say fun – communicator, most notably via his YouTube channel, which has become one of the biggest wine channels in the world with more than 163,000 subscribers.
