The tiny and fascinating Jura wine region of eastern France has in a short time garnered an extraordinary following from wine afficionados across the world. Yet, among the couple of hundred vignerons, more than 40 of them running their vineyards organically, it is the same old names that tend to receive the kudos (Tissot – Ganevat – Overnoy – Labet – Puffeney – Pélican…).
For this tasting, Wink Lorch, author of the highly-acclaimed book Jura Wine, will focus on the rising stars of the region: a selection of young vignerons, who have established themselves in the last decade or so, and new generations of traditional vignerons who have chosen to work in a more qualitative and/or innovative manner.
Jura is known for its tapestry of terroirs, variations on clay-limestone born from the Jura mountains, and for its five key grape varieties, three of them indigenous. From these grapes the vignerons craft a myriad of wine styles from sparkling through light reds, whites to rival Burgundies, oxidative whites including the famous Vin Jaune, and more oddities too. The selection of wines to taste will cover as many wine styles as feasible.
Stocks are very limited for all Jura wines, so this is a fabulous opportunity to experience a taste of these unusual wines in the company of Wink, who will share her many stories about the region and its fascinating vignerons.
