Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 1959-2015 with Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez – Wednesday 18th October

Between 1921 and 1943, Moët & Chandon was one and the same as Moët’s original prestige cuvée, Dom Pérignon. Since the two have diverged, Dom Pérignon has hogged most of the limelight. But for many Champagne purists, the Moët Grand Vintage, as Champagne authority Essi Avellan MW says, ‘deserves far more recognition’. We are therefore delighted to shine a light on the cuveé in an astonishing vertical tasting going back to 1959.

Today, Grand Vintage represents a tiny fraction of Moët & Chandon’s output, similar in proportion to many other houses’ vintage Champagne. The 2015 release is the 76th vintage since the cuvée was launched in 1842. As a result, chef de cave Benoît Gouez enjoys the luxury of a singular focus on quality, allowing for full freedom of expression, few rules, and little pressure to declare a vintage unless the year truly demands it. “We restart from scratch every year,” says Gouez. “We don’t have recipes locked in a safe.”

We are delighted to offer members rare access to the house’s library stock via a tasting with the man who chooses whether or not a vintage will be declared. We are particularly thrilled to be able to showcase the Grand Vintage Collection, older vintages which are late-disgorged and spend a minimum of 15 years on lees, matured on cork and then hand-riddled, hand-disgorged and hand-labelled before leaving the cellar.

Join us as we welcome Benoît Gouez, along with Moët & Chandon Global Grand Vintage Ambassador Ethan Boroian, to the St. James’s Room for a truly special event. Members will have the opportunity to taste 11 of the finest years to be released, including 1959, 1978, 1995 and 1996, alongside caviar blinis and a range of canapes in an evening destined to live long in the memory.
