Henschke: an Australian legend, with winemaker Johann Henschke – Wednesday 20th September

Few producers occupy such a prominent position in the annals of Australian wine as Henschke.

From the time this Lutheran family first arrived in Australia, fleeing religious persecution in their native Poland and planting their first vines in the 1860s, provenance and purity have been paramount to an estate whose quality-focused approach has mirrored Australia’s viticultural evolution.

Today, sixth-generation winemaker Johann Henschke, in consort with his father Stephen, continues the traditional, holistic winemaking employed by his ancestors. His mother Prue oversees the biodynamically cultivated vineyards.

In contrast to the often ‘overworked’ reds found in many parts of Australia, the Henschke wines are handled gently, with minimal intervention. As a result, whereas the archetypal Barossa Valley Shiraz is rich and powerful, the Henschke wines, from the higher altitude Eden Valley, show great elegance and nuance, with lower alcohol levels but still a fine seam of concentrated, savoury fruit that makes for notable ageing.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the two renowned single-vineyard wines, Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace, from sites whose dry-farmed, low-yielding, gnarled old vines, planted on their own rootstock, date back an astonishing 160 years.

We will taste both wines at a rather special event in September, when we are delighted to welcome Johann to the Club for what promises to be a memorable tasting and a first-hand insight into this much-acclaimed family estate.

The wines we will be tasting:
