The Allegrini family can trace its roots in the Veneto back to the 16th century. It has been producing wine there for generations and has been arguably the major architect of the recent rebirth of Valpolicella.
It was Giovanni Allegrini who led the winery through a profound transformation in the second half of the 20th century, moving the perception of Valpolicella away from that of a mass-produced wine dominated by large co-operatives thanks to the help of his children: Walter in the vineyards; Marilisa as the public face of the winery; and Franco, the restless winemaker. The inheritance has now passed into the hands of the new generation, Silvia and Francesco, who joins Marilisa.
We are delighted to welcome Silvia and Francesco Allegrini to the Club to present a tasting of wines from this Italian powerhouse, accompanied by the country’s first Master of Wine Gabriele Gorelli, who will provide valuable insight into Valpolicella’s place within the Italian wine canon.
Allegrini was one of the first families to develop single-vineyard ‘cru’ wines, including the historic La Grola. In 1979 Giovanni Allegrini bought this site after years of neglect, introducing for the first time in Valpolicella, the practice of Guyot training. At the top of the La Grola hill sits the celebrated 3ha vineyard La Poja, remarkable for its white chalk soil and dedicated to 100% Corvina, the wine aged extensively in new oak and renowned for its marriage of concentration and elegance.
We will taste both wines on the night, along with four examples of Allegrini’s famous, rich Amarone made via the classic Appassimento technique, with dried grapes. These will include two of its famous Riserva Fieramonte, the first Amarone to have been awarded 100 points by Decanter.
