A Taste of New Zealand with Stephen White of Stonyridge – Tuesday 16th August

We invite Members to the St James’s Room for a taste of New Zealand, where we will enjoy some award-winning Stonyridge wines under the tutelage of Stephen White.

Stonyridge Vineyard is a low cropping and sustainable red wine producer located in the coastal highs of Waiheke Island, Auckland, New Zealand. The estate has produced some of New Zealand’s most sought-after red wines for over 30 years and continues to push for higher quality.

The winery is the ongoing dream of owner and founder Stephen White, who in 1981 returned to New Zealand after successfully sailing the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. He then set off to explore, skippering yachts in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific oceans and working in wineries throughout France, Italy, and California. It was during this 3-year adventure that Stephen came to love the culture and lifestyle of the Mediterranean and the great red wines of France, Tuscany, Spain, and California.

Having produced his first vintage in 1985, Stephen later made the great 1987 Larose that rocketed Stonyridge to national fame, before attracting international attention with a wine hailed as ‘the greatest red wine ever made in New Zealand’.

In the French Guide Les Editions du Bottin Gourmand 2000, Stonyridge 1996 came first equal with Lafite Rothschild, Petrus and Cheval Blanc. Their signature wine, Larose, was the first Bordeaux 5 blend in the New World and is widely known as the most rewarded New Zealand red wine.

We are delighted to welcome Stephen, now known as a pioneer of red winemaking in New Zealand, where he will introduce 7 Stonyridge wines to our Members. We hope you are able to join us for this unmissable event.

We hope to see you there…
